    What does breast augmentation entail?

For the majority of patients, breast augmentation is performed using implants – in a few cases, fat can be transferred from another part of your body to the breasts. Implants are either filled with silicone or water/saline. They come in round or teardrop shapes with a smooth or textured surface. Dr. Orloff will use your exam findings to determine which type will work best for you and help you make an informed decision.

During the consultation, Dr. Orloff will review your medical history and examine your breasts. This examination will focus on your current appearance in terms of size, shape, proportion, and differences from side to side. It’s critical to know your goals so he can make recommendations that will achieve your desired look. After all, this is all about making you happy!

Why do women seek breast enhancement surgery?

The goal is to have beautifully shaped breasts that are either larger or smaller. Each individual has her own reasons, but these are the most common reasons for seeking breast enhancement surgery:

    • Make the breasts fuller or larger.

    • Make the breasts smaller if they are too large.

    • Lifting sagging breasts.

    • Achieving symmetry if breasts are uneven.

What can I expect from breast reduction surgery?

Most people who request breast reduction surgery have developed breasts that are too large, causing pain and discomfort. For overweight patients, Dr. Orloff will emphasize the option of weight loss before recommending surgery.

During surgery, Dr. Orloff will aim to make the breasts smaller while lifting them and enhancing their shape. There are two main approaches:

    • Vertical Breast Reduction
This approach is used for people with less excess skin. The breast is reduced centrally leaving a final scar that is around the areola and extending down to the fold under the breast.

    • Inverted T Breast Reduction
This approach is required for women with considerable excess skin. The breast is reduced all around and the final scar goes around the areola, down to the breast fold and curves along the breast fold. In many cases, Dr. Orloff will use a “hybrid” approach to yield the best results.

Which technique will work for you depends on the level of drooping and amount of extra skin you have. Recovery from breast reduction surgery is straightforward and most women are back to driving a vehicle within a few days.

Who’s an ideal candidate for a breast lift?

Contrary to popular belief, girls and women of all ages can be affected by sagging breasts. Age is a common cause of breast sagging, but it can also occur when you first develop breasts and after weight loss. The medical term used to describe sagging breasts is breast ptosis, and a breast lift (mastopexy) surgery can remedy this condition.

There are three types of breast lifts:

    • Circumareolar Lift
If you have just a little bit of sagging, a circumareolar type lift may be adequate. The lift results in a scar around the areola only. A circumareolar lift can only be performed in conjunction with a breast implant. If a breast implant is not used, a circumareolar lift will flatten your breasts.

    • Vertical Lift
If you have greater sagging and more drooping skin, a vertical lift is the next option. The scar is around the areola and extends down to the breast fold under the breast. This procedure can be performed with or without an implant.

    • Inverted T Lift
If you have significant sagging of the breasts, the best procedure is an inverted T incision that maximizes the lift and shape of the breasts. The scar goes around the areola, down to the breast fold, and along the breast fold. An inverted T breast lift can be performed with or without an implant.

    What is gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the medical term for the swelling of the breast tissue in men and boys. Abnormal breast development can occur in men at any age, though it primarily affects boys going through puberty. It’s not unusual for one side of the chest to be affected more dramatically than the other.

Although many are familiar with the phenomenon commonly referred to as “man boobs,” not many realize it can be addressed with surgery.

    What does gynecomastia surgery entail?

The type and extent of surgery depend on the amount of excess skin. Most boys and young men will have a firm “nubbin” of actual breast tissue under the nipple area, which can be tender, and some excess fat surrounding this breast tissue. In these cases, Dr. Orloff can use a specialized form of liposuction to remove and sculpt the fat – but the actual breast tissue needs to be removed surgically with a small curved incision following the outline below the nipple area.

As men get older the breasts may become larger, and with that comes extra skin – if this is the case, Dr. Orloff will structure your surgery to result in a flatter chest minus the drooping skin.
